The UK’s Autumn Budget 2024 allocated £3.4 billion over the next three years for heat decarbonisation and household energy efficiency. This includes £1.8 billion dedicated to fuel poverty initiatives, aiming to help over 225,000 households lower their energy bills. Additional funding is directed at the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the UK heat pump supply chain.
Gas boilers face ban in homes within years
The UK government is moving forward with plans to ban gas boilers in new homes by 2027. In a bid to cut household carbon emissions by 75%, legislation will require new homes to use electric heat pumps or other non-gas alternatives. Industry leaders have raised concerns about the readiness of the heat pump supply chain and the National Grid’s capacity to meet increased electricity demands.

New research highlights heating installers could help UK homeowners manage rising energy costs by advising them on how best to optimise heating controls. According to the study, nearly a third of consumers are very concerned about winter energy costs, with many hesitant to switch on heating. Additionally, 68% of homeowners want simple, user-friendly controls, and 92% of installers report increased customer inquiries about efficient heating use. This trend underscores installers’ vital role in educating customers on energy management.
Van drivers warned they may be voiding their insurance
Van drivers may unknowingly invalidate their insurance with common oversights. For instance, adding signage or branding without informing the insurer could increase risk and potentially void coverage. Similarly, a messy van that police deem hazardous could lead to fines, points on the license, and even insurance invalidation if an accident occurs. Other pitfalls include choosing the wrong “class of use” for commercial vans, providing inaccurate parking locations, and omitting or misrepresenting personal details like occupation or mileage.

A study has raised concerns about the lack of asbestos awareness and safety training among UK tradespeople. Marking 25 years since the asbestos ban, the research found that half of tradespeople view asbestos as a “problem of the past,” often underestimating the risks.

The latest UK Construction PMI report reveals a slowdown in growth within the UK construction sector. Commercial construction grew at a slower pace, while residential building saw a slight decline, impacted by high borrowing costs and economic uncertainty. Recruitment continued to grow, although business confidence hit its lowest level since December 2023, affected by inflation and supply chain concerns.
SNIPEF reveals financial strain and skills shortages in plumbing and heating sector
The Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers Federation (SNIPEF) has issued a strong warning on the challenges facing plumbing and heating businesses. While demand remains robust, with 84% of surveyed members expecting steady or rising orders, ongoing issues such as payment delays, rising operational costs, and a significant shortage of skilled workers are stressing the industry.
Positive signs despite a drop in plumbing & heating merchant sales
The latest Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) report indicates an 8.5% drop in sales value for August 2024 compared to last year, primarily impacted by fewer trading days. However, there is optimism within the sector. Encouragingly, recent upticks in mortgage approvals and a reduction in inflation point to increased consumer confidence. Industry leaders are optimistic that these factors could stimulate future growth and sales recovery in the plumbing and heating market.
UK heat pump workforce poised for growth
A new report from the Heat Pump Association (HPA) indicates promising growth in the UK’s heat pump workforce, with over 7,800 individuals completing qualifications in 2023 – an impressive 133% rise from the previous year. This trend is essential to meet the government’s target of 600,000 installations annually by 2028 and 122,000 by 2035.

A recent article is helping homeowners discover the best way to heat their homes. According to the report, electric heaters can be a more economical choice when heating a single room, while gas-powered central heating is cheaper for heating an entire home. Smart electric heaters with energy-saving features can provide additional savings, especially if combined strategically with central heating.
Boilers most likely to break down on December 15
According to new data, December 15 is the most common date for boiler breakdowns in the UK, with repair demand peaking just before Christmas. To help avoid costly repairs, homeowners are encouraged to perform simple maintenance, such as bleeding radiators, checking boiler pressure, adding pipe insulation, installing a smart thermostat, and scheduling regular cleaning.
